I noticed them right after my 35th birthday. Fine lines just started appearing on my face, and I suddenly got really, really serious about my anti-aging skincare routine. Look, we can have a whole conversation re: societal pressures on women to age gracefully (read: not look like they are aging at all), and how we should embrace the fine lines that tell the story of our lives. I truly believe we should value women's beauty at all ages. I also believe that I want to minimize the lines on my face for as long as I can. One of the many paradoxes of being a woman! (For a similar struggle on weight, rather than aging, check out this excellent piece by Taffy Brodesser-Akner in the New York Times Magazine).
In any case, I am now an avid user of retinols, eye creams, and various other potions. I thought I had heard it all, but I had clearly never seen the light (pun so intended) and looked into LED light therapy. The Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare SpectraLite EyeCare Pro is a FDA-cleared anti-aging device that uses therapeutic light, supposedly proven to stimulate the natural production of collagen. The idea is that you wear this awesome Geordi La Forge mask for three minutes a day, and you'll see a reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles, and increased skin firmness and elasticity.
The kit includes the visor and a power charger, and the device is easy to plug in with any USB adapter. You simply charge and wear the device over clean skin for three minutes (the device includes an auto shut-off), then apply your regular eye creams, etc. The light is bright enough that you can't hang out, and, say, rewatch that last episode of Game of Thrones, but you can flip through a magazine, do stuff around the house, or just close your eyes and relax.
I have only had my device for a few days, so I can't yet comment on its efficacy (though the reviews give me hope). I'll update this post over the next few weeks and months to give you progress reports! In the meantime, if you'd like to check out this product for yourself, come meet me tomorrow (Saturday, August 12th) at Sephora at Faneuil Hall from 11:00AM-Noon to #WearTheLite and receive complimentary consultations and treatments. See you there!
