You've made it to the weekend, and boy, have you earned it. Why not celebrate your Saturday? Maybe do a little bargain hunting, and meet your girlfriends for drinks? Or maybe take the kids to something fun, then hit up a movie? Maybe you just want a romantic dinner? Whatever way you like to celebrate Saturday, I can assure you it can happen at Assembly Row in Somerville.
I visited Assembly Row last weekend for the first time with my girlfriend Najeema, and was surprised at what I discovered. I knew that Phase One of Assembly Row had recently been completed, and that it included outlet shopping and restaurants. "Well, OK", I thought. "Another outdoor mall." I couldn't have been more wrong! I was startled and pleased by the caliber of the shops (Hello, Saks Off Fifth) and the easy-going elegance of the dining, but the thing I found most unexpected (and delightful) was the sense of community at Assembly Row. While the buildings are new, the architects took particular care to pay homage to the industrial background of the space (see if you can find the clever call backs to Ford Motor Company and the Boston and Maine Railroad when you visit). With chic apartments nestled in the neighborhood, people were out and about, playing in the park and walking their dogs. Najeema and I spent the whole afternoon shopping, strolling, and gabbing, and finished up the day with a drink and a bite overlooking the Mystic River at River Bar, which may actually have one of the best patios in the Boston area (for real).
Assembly Row is easily accessible off the Orange Line, and the swanky parking garages are free (you'll see what I mean by swanky). So if you're in the mood to celebrate this Saturday, or simply want a surprising shake up to your weekend routine, just head to Somerville, and Assembly Row.

ReplyDeleteThanks for reading, Mahee! I really enjoyed my afternoon there, and definitely plan to go back. That patio at River Bar is the best!
